Cheshire Wellness Win Awards at Spatex 2010

Cheshire Wellness attended the annual SPATEX event last weekend at the Hilton Hotel in Brighton. As per usual it was a fantastic event and thankfully just a flurry of snow this year compared to the arctic conditions of 2009.

The prestigious SPATA awards and Gala Dinner were held on the Sunday evening were black tie was the order of the day. Cheshire Wellness entered in to four categories and were delighted to win the following:

Domestic Pool of the Year 2010: A Northwest residential pool made from Quartzite stone imported from Switzerland featuring freeboard, deck level and cascading edges. Also fiber optics were inserted into the water cannons to create ambient water colors and a tropical garden created by the developers of the Eden Project. A mosaic tiled spa was the final addition to the award winning project.

Commercial Pool of the Year for 2010: Hoole Hall, a Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Chester involved a basement 18m x 4.5mtr Lap Pool, sunken lounge area, Hydro Pool and an outdoor Watsu Pool, as well as experience rooms. The Lap Pool being tiled in white tiles to create a Mediterranean blue water color with a secondary stone grating set below floor level to aid drainage. The sunken lounge lies between the Lap Pool and Hydro Pool with glass panels, soft seating and an area for a real fire. Moving on to the Hydro Pool with its air loungers with duel massage jets, which then links to the outdoor Watsu Pool with bubble benches, cascading waterfall and all lying under a retractable roof to utilize the area all year round and create different experiences.

Cheshire Wellness have now won Commercial Pool of the Year consecutively for three years.

Non Traditional Pool of the Year 2010: The Spencer Dock project in Ireland involved 11 Swim Spas being manufactured on site, delivered and installed on the rooftops of luxurious penthouse apartments.

Buy a hot tub in safety?

The hot tub industry is very much a powder keg of dealers and distributors, knowing who to ask for advice and who to buy from without experiencing problems or worse post sale is hard at best.

For a start I would recommend reading an earlier post of mine Hot Tub Buying - Other Considerations? if you haven't already, this is a great starting point in weighing up dealers.

Moving forward from this there appears to be confusion around safety and what questions should people be asking when looking into a purchase.

Whats CE and why should I care?

CE approval is a legal requirement for any product that wishes to be sold in the EU these days and you will find it on products from any industry be it toys to spas to televisions. What this mark means is that it has been tested as safe to be used in the EU and safe to be used on 240v mains if the product requires it, for true CE approval the fully assembled product should be tested as this then covers all workings not just a few components.

This means that the dealer has a leg to stand on should something go a miss but more importantly the consumer has the confidence the product meets EU standards and is safe to be used in our country. CE ratings are expensive to obtain for manufacturers and need to be done on each product they make so don't feel that CE doesn't mean a lot as manufacturers can spend many thousands of £$Y on having an approved product.

Bishta, who are they and why should I care?

Bishta membership does not mean a dealer is financially sound or they sell a good, bad or ugly product, what it does mean is that you as a consumer will receive correct information on looking after your spa to prevent illness from contaminated water post sale. Added to this should you receive bad service or after sales care and the dealer in question is a Bishta dealer and still in business you have a direct mediation service that will resolve the dispute for you and get the best service possible, so in a way it is after sales piece of mind.

Electrical who cares who wires a spa up?

Any electrical connection these days to your home should be undertaken by a registered electrical installer who can issue you with a certificate that you would need if you were to sell the house at a later date or to prove under insurance that the installation was competent. All spas requiring over 13amps should be run directly from the fuse board on its own RCD/MCB breaker for a clean supply to avoid brown outs.

In summary always ask these three questions when viewing spas.....

1. Are your spas CE approved (ask for proof!)

2. Are you a Bishta member (FYI there are dealers out there who are solid and not bishta approved but do your homework first)

3. Do you offer electrical installation, are they NIC registered and what paperwork will I receive on installation.

Simple but effective to weed out fly by night dealers!

Swim Spa Offerings In Todays Hot Tub Market - An Industry Review

First introduced to the UK some ten years ago, swim spas were initially slow starters. But with modern day life attracting a seemingly endless obsession with healthy lifestyles, swim spas are at last catching on with the Great British public.

Despite the gloomy economic challenges, swim spas are bucking the trend and enjoying an increased market share. Promising sales figures show the sector is gathering pace, not quite a deluge but a steady counter flow.

"2009 has seen a substantial increase in the sales of swim spas" confirms Stephen Crabb of Catalina Spas, "this is the best year ever, we could never have predicted the current level of sales". Stephen believes the economic downturn has come with a silver lining for increased swim spa sales that are selling for their cost saving appeal.

"A swim spa costs substantially less than installing a pool and due to its compact size, lends itself easily and inexpensively to be enclosed. Running costs are also likely to be substantially less than a pool and the customer has a greater choice, benefiting from more features and functions".

Isobel Rickards Sanger of Elite Spas agrees, "since entering the pool and spa industry in 2001, our swim spa sales have increased dramatically year on year".

SWIM SPA GROWTH

"The current economic climate has not had a significant impact or halted that growth as 2009 has already exceeded our expectations".

Alex Kelmsley of Waterstream UK is also enjoying increased sales, "the swim spa market in the UK is still quite niche although I see it starting to encroach into the swimming pool market as people look for value for money and a product they do not have to leave in their house when they move. Interest is picking up strongly particularly with people looking to put them inside cabins".

Anthony Schneikert of Maxx Spas UK says the increased amount of product choice has been fundamental in raising awareness of the all singing all dancing product. As more brands have decided to manufacture a swim spa, this has created a market place which previously did not exist".

"We are finding some dealerships are still selling swim spas at a good rate, due to end users wanting to invest the money they have into the home property and its only one of the guaranteed investments in today's shaky markets".

Stephen Weller of Master Spas Europe says the high number of swim spa players has resulted in a collapse in not just consumer prices but also in trade margins. "Swim spas and fitness pools were one of the best kept secrets by way of high profit sales in the UK market for ten years but the market has now become flooded over the last three years".

"The market is still evolving around price and Internet promises, at the moment with tank and jet units, the market is swamped by Chinese copies and unaccountable sellers of products similar looking and performing to North American models".

"It is now an over crowded niche market to be avoided by the non specialist and you should only display if you have a genuine quality product with points of difference".

Anthony Schneikert agrees, "as swim spas go, the Internet has been a mecca for Chinese swim spas falsely branded as US manufactured products damaging the market as a whole through false advertising and falsely leading on end users. On the other hand, the Internet has provided more awareness for the swim spa market to grow. By adding more information on products, this has helped the consumer understand more about the product and possibly leads them to find a local dealer so that they can wet test a swim spa".

"Swim spas are however all different once you are inside one swimming, therefore a wet test on each model is the only way to truly know the right model for you".

SWIM SPA DISPLAYS

Display units are vital to increase swim spa sales advises Don Elkington of Coast Spas. "Swim spas cannot be sold from a brochure, displaying a swim spa is the key to successful sales and further demonstration or wet tests for the consumer will be necessary".

Anthony Schneikert agrees recommending retailers to maximise their swim spa sales by having on display a demonstration model, that can be wet tested. "Many people would not spend £20,000 or more on a car without test driving it, so we believe it is the same with a swim spa. Retailers who do have a swim spa on display will have the edge on their competitors, as the buyer will always want to test if the swim spa is appropriate for them, and if it is the type of product they can see themselves using in the future".

Stephen Crabb agrees that the key to maximising swim spa sales is display. "The Internet is helpful in locating or sourcing the various swim spa options but I question if many or any are sold online. Display is vital, although they can be sold off the page there is nothing to beat the actual experience of test driving the swim spa".

SWIM SPA ADVANCES

Originally extended hot tubs offering just swimming against a fast flowing blast of water, the latest swim spa models now offer everything from jogging to rowing and only stop at making the tea! wellness is the number one factor for swim spa customers who are looking to increase their exercise by having fun doing it.

Although there are many different swim spa lengths, there is one common thread in all swim spas and that is the actual swim area between nine and ten feet. Water temperature for swimming varies between 85F -104F therefore if the swim spa is all in one the difficulty for the consumer is adjusting the temperature for their different usages.

There are swim spas that have separated the hot tub from the swimming side and they have separate heaters. These offer a much better design for sure and are much less expensive for the consumer to maintain when it comes to heating the spa.

The average running cost for a swim spa is put at about £15 weekly based on daily use of 40 minutes depending on outside temperatures. The upkeep of a swim spa is no different to a hot tub, the water must be kept clean and balanced at all times and water level should be kept topped up so that optimum water flow and filtration is achieved.

Stephen Crabb warns about close attention to details. "Do not be fooled by price, it is important that as the name suggests the swim part of the spa needs to perform. If the whole thing runs on 13 amps that is why it is probably cheap, if you want performance you need power. Basic comparison criteria should include price, speed of installations, safety, running costs, convenience, all year round use, features, functions and health benefits".

"Cranes are usually the best option for installation and surprisingly inexpensive when compared to the labour involved with moving a swim spa around!".

Each Arctic Spa comes with our Premier Heatlock® Insulation system, designed to minimize heat loss and to maximize energy efficiency.
We apply high density urethane foam to the floor, cabinet walls and the underside of the spa rim. In combination with the spas's sturdy construction, this creates an insulating air space. This means that incidental heat from the heaters and pumps is directed inward through the shell instead of outward, thereby decreasing heating costs by capturing and transferring this ambient heat to the spa water. Q. What's the difference between a hot tub and a jacuzzi?
A. Hot Tub is a generic term. Numerous companies supply them. However, Jacuzzi is a brand name. Jacuzzi has been making hot tubs in California since 1968. These days, they are just one of many good brands on offer.

Q. Does sitting in a spa really reduce stress and blood pressure?
A. Many leading medical authorities believe so. They also consider that a spa or hot tub is useful in healing sports injuries, arthritis and after orthopaedic surgery. But many of us simply find that it is a delightfully sensuous luxury.

Q. Can electricity and water really co-exist safely?
A. They do in your washing machine and your steam iron. You must have a qualified electrician make the watertight connection to your mains supply, but a competent person can then connect the hot tub to this using an RCD. Always consult your BISHTA registered installer about this first.

Q. How often should I change the water?
A. It depends on how frequently you use your hot tub. Your BISHTA supplier will advise you on the best practice for your particular model, but BISHTA standards recommend as a broad rule of thumb that you should change the water about every 12 weeks.

Q. Must the hot tub be connected to the main water supply?
A. No. Most people just use a hosepipe to top it up.

Q. Could I buy a chemical-free hot tub?
A. Like swimming pools, all hot tubs need disinfectant chemicals to maintain a safe bathing environment. Be very careful about claims that you can run a hot tub without chemicals. So far, nobody has come up with anything as effective as chlorine, bromine or other halogens for killing bacteria in water.

Q. What about maintenance?
A. Your BISHTA expert can tell you all you need to know about water maintenance, purification and filtration.

Q. Can I put the hot tub anywhere in my garden?
A. Yes – so long as it is flat, and has a solid base. You could also site it indoors, if you had a big enough area like a conservatory or wet room.

So your buying a hot tub, you have searched the web narrowed it down to 3-5 dealers and make a plan to wet test each make to see what fits your requirements. It all sounds great and this is definitely the right way to start the buying process, what people don't think to ask is the important questions once they get to the showrooms.

These include...

Why do you sell this make?
How long have you been selling this make?
How long have you been selling spas?
How many brands have you sold in this time?
What else does the company do?
What happens to me and the warranty should you go out of business?
Where are the main distribution company, how long have they been dealing with the product and will they service my tub under warranty if you don't?
What does my warranty cover, is it pro rated?
Do I pay up front for warranty work then claim back from the manufacturer?
Can I go to any dealer to get service work done?
How long has the salesman/women been selling the brand? how long has he/she been in the spa industry?
Does he/she own a tub if so what make and why?
What other brands would they sell if they didn't sell this brand?
Can you arrange for me to speak to one of your existing customers?

I'm sure there are others, the point being it's as important who you buy the tub from as it is the tub itself. A warranty is only as good as you have a dealer and that dealer can be contacted, a dealer who shows little loyalty to brands may decide to ditch you once they stop selling the brand you have bought from them so be wary.

These are of course guidelines to aid you in making the best choice when buying a spa, if something doesn't quite add up or there answers don't fill you with confidence then walk away, no matter how much they offer to 'knock off' the price!

People with arthritis have a very difficult time moving and by being submerged in warm water, they are alleviated of some of their discomfort and are even able to get the unimaginable done; they are able to exercise with little discomfort.

As always, with any new activity, if you are an arthritis sufferer and would like to start enjoying the hot tub, please first check with a physician before you begin.
When your doctor has said its okay for you to begin exercising in a hot tub, start off by allowing your body to warm up for several minutes before starting any exercises. This is one of those miracle uses of the hot tub for people with arthritis because not only will they be able to get some exercising in, they will be able to gain muscle by doing so.

It is extremely important to take things slowly when exercising in a hot tub for several reasons; one is because you can strain muscles if you are not properly warmed up before starting, two is the fact that it is possible to over exert yourself in a hot tub by doing too much or doing it for too long to where you become lightheaded and dizzy. Getting to that point won’t help any exercising, and it can be detrimental to your over-all health. The third reason to take things slowly happens after you have exercised, keep in mind that now that your muscles have been stretched and worked, it is important to keep them warm for several minutes before getting out of the hot tub to allow your muscles to relax before hitting the cooler air.

For the person who suffers with arthritis, the mere fact that they are able to move with less discomfort in a hot tub or even a swimming pool is nothing shy of miraculous. Those with arthritis are in constant pain and a lot of it has to do with the simple fact that there is a gravitational pull to the earth we live on and that is greatly alleviated if they are submerged in water. Warm water is an added benefit because it will also cause the blood vessels to dilate, which will allow for more blood and oxygen to flow to muscles and skin not to mention the heart.

But it is an activity that if not followed and practiced properly could bring on more problems than were there before. So if you are thinking about getting some exercise in a hot tub where your arthritis will be lessened, don’t forget to talk to your doctor first and follow the guidelines that have been presented in order to take the best care of you. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching a child play in water. Hot tubs are especially attractive to children because of their depth, which is usually not as deep as the swimming pool and because of the warm temperature. But there are dangers when children and hot tubs are mixed and there isn’t a clue as to what may happen if precautions are not followed.First child safety tip in regards to a hot tub is to not allow access to any child to the water, especially in the absence of adult supervision. How is that achieved? That safety precaution is kept by having a lockable hot tub cover that will not allow a child access to the water.

No matter what, under any circumstances, should a child be left alone near a hot tub, if a phone rings and you need to answer it, take the child, too. There isn’t any reason for a child to be near a hot tub without adult supervision and many potentially fatal accidents have been prevented by the attention of an adult.

It is important to keep the temperature of a hot tub in mind if child safety is an issue. While most adults can tolerate high temperatures, children are less likely to because among other things, their skin is thinner than that of an adult. With thinner skin, a child is more likely to become over-heated, which can cause dizziness and light-headedness, which can lead to drowning. Children should not stay in a hot tub, with a temperature more than 104 degrees than five minutes or so. Again, this is where adult supervision comes in because a child will not know what is happening to them if they become disoriented as a result of prolonged time in a hot tub; and they may not be able to communicate that they are feeling over-heated or nauseous. As an adult, the monitoring of a child is entirely up to you, no excuses.

The environment in which we enjoy hot tubs can also be a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and if not treated, can cause serious illness. If there is any child with an open wound, they should not enter the hot tub, in their own best interest. If a child is too young to tell someone that they need to go to the bathroom, or if they are still in a diaper, they should not, under any circumstances be allowed in a hot tub. Any fecal matter in the moist, warm environment of a hot tub is a dangerous mixture and can cause many, many illnesses. Be safe with this one by keeping the pH levels balanced and having the proper chemicals on hand, if they are needed.

Because children are more susceptible to germs and have not been around long enough to have produced the antibodies it takes to fight some infections, it is imperative that their safety and the safety of those around them, not be compromised by not adhering to the point that children not yet able to express the need to use the bathroom be put in a hot tub, where they may cause fecal matter to be introduced to the atmosphere.

Which Spa's provide Varied Massage?

There seems to be quite a few different types of jets around. Which are the best types and how many different types should there be in the spa to provide varied massage?

Is it better to have more jets rather than fewer jets? Do I need to look for more pumps if the spa has lots of jets?

A. Jets by definition come in three rough sizes in the industry, 1 inch, 3 inch and 5 inch, although there are larger footwell jets now being fitted in most spas it is the seat jets we will be concentrating on here.Things to look for when viewing a tub include number of jets, size of jets and position of jets. Although people may think a tub full of 5" jets is the best thing to look for you would be wrong, all the same you don't want one with all 1" either.Each size of jet will give the bather different hydrotherapy properties and therefore a tub offering variation on all sizes of jets is the tub to ultimately look for. Position of the jets can be a comfort and massage issue, therefore testing the tub you are interested in both dry and wet will give you the consumer the answer to both these questions as you are the one that will be using the tub. Jet positions throughout the tub to obtain a full body massage from shoulders to feet including if possible hands is again the aim however wet test to see what YOU think of the tub. As most spas have either 5 or 6 seats you are also looking for variation on jet type across the seats when it comes to the 3 and 5 inch size as you may have more than one seat with the same size of jet.Lastly number of jets in the spa, this is of course important however the spa must be balanced correctly so the available jets do not outweigh the available pump power and effect pressure at the jets and therefore the tubs hydrotherapy. Most tubs have air venturis and diverter handles to handle power direction should the manufacturer wish to offer more jets with the same number of pumps, check pump and flow rates of the spa and compare brands for better understanding of this. How can I tell what the likely running costs are going to be on different types of spa. I've been quoted everything from 8p to £2 per day in electrical running costs.With the price of electric going the way it is this is obviously going up my shopping list.What types of features should I be looking for to ensure that use of electric is minimised?

A. Running costs of a spa come down to mainly a few things, insulation of the shell and plumbing, you charge per KWh and efficiency of the cover, this is a basic overview of electrical running costs. Other running costs include chemical costs which are affected by filter and ozone efficiency.Firstly electrical costs, this can be broken down into efficiency of the heater and heat loss through the shell and cover. Things to look out for here are thickness of hard cover and ability to clip down the cover to avoid winds lifting the cover off the spa. Heat losses through the shell will depend on thickness of insulation on the shell, if the plumbing that can be foamed is foamed and how many layers of insulation the manufacturer uses. Added to this the density of the foam can vary considerably from 0.5 to 2lb the higher the figure the more dense and therefore better insulation rating for the same thickness sprayed. Bases which vary between manufacturers are designed primarily to keep out moisture from the frame of the tub rather than stop heat escaping as by definition heat rises, but a base on the spa will help. Make sure figures given by manufacturers state in what way the tub has been used to obtain these results, i.e. temp of tub water, ambient temp, usage per day, KWh cost etc. only then can you make a comparison across different manufacturers. It is highly possible your usage will differ from the tested norm anyway so try to factor this in and be honest with yourself.Chemical costs can vary significantly due to usage of the tub and therefore no definitive answer can be given on costs, however a tub with a higher filtration capacity will in the main keep cleaner water used with the same amount of chemicals. Ozone fitted on a tub will help aid the chemicals and therefore means less chemicals are used to maintain the tub, NB. As per BISHTA guidelines chemicals should always be used alongside a tub fitted with ozone regardless of what anyone tells you.The way ozone is plumbed on a tub can vary the effectiveness depending on how long the ozone is being injected for in a 24hr period and how long the ozone has to break down wastes before it reaches the tub and off gases as ozone by definition does not reside in the tub water like chemicals do.I would recommend speaking directly to a dealer regarding the above to better understand how different manufacturers build there spas.

Lounge Seat or Open Plan all-seater?

What are the pros and cons of buying either a spa with a lounge seat or one with a more open-plan all-seat style. What should I be looking for in either option?

A. If you haven't wet tested a spa before then you may not be able to make a determination without doing so. A spa without lounge will usually give you more seating positions as seats are located on all sides of the tub facing inwards, whereas a lounge will take up one side of the tub where 2-3 seats would normally be located. Having said this, spas with loungers usually have enough seats anyway to accommodate most sizes of families. The lounge design itself is important and I would recommend if you are able to wet test the lounge then do so. If the lounge is too flat you will float out, too curved and it will not be comfortable or follow your body's natural contours. When testing think where the jets hit you when in the lounge, are there foot rests, arm rests and headrest?To lounge or not to lounge is a question only you can answer as this is pure consumer preference.

Does Pump Type, Pump Size or the Amount of Pumps Matter?

A. HORSEPOWER CLAIMS ON HOT TUBS AND SPAS The BISHTA Committee has recently discussed the confusion in the marketplace over horsepower claims for pumps on hot tubs. While the industry norm is around 2hp, claims of ratings up to as much as 10hp can be found on some manufacturers' literature, with the implication for the customer that higher ratings must be better. The BISHTA Committee is aware that these claims and the literature that contains them originates from America and is expressed on a different basis from UK practice, and has urged all members to prepare their own explanatory material to interpret these figures in commonly understood terms.

Can a Spa Cater for all Sizes

I am 6'5" tall and my wife is only 5'2". To complicate matters even more we have 2 small kids so I am severely outnumbered by the vertically challenged!What should we be looking for to make sure that the spa that we buy suits all of us...obviously I don't want to have half of my body sticking out of the water but my wife doesn't want to wear a snorkel for fear of drowning. Help!

A. In my experience I would always recommend some variation in seating levels. Not only due to heights of bathers but also to accommodate variation in seasons. I for one do not need to be fully immersed in hot weather or if I have been in a tub for a length of time I appreciate being able to lift my arms and shoulders out. I would suggest wet testing for at least 30 minutes a time to understand what I mean.

Everyone telling you to buy there brand because it's the best, not sure which company is giving the right advice then look for a dealer through BISHTA (The British and Irish Hot Tub Association).

They make sure there dealers of whatever brand maintain the highest standards in displays, chemical advice and professionalism, seek these dealers out if you are in any doubt and you won't go too far wrong. As a consumer you also get the added bonus of having the backup of BISHTA should something go wrong with the dealer on supply, delivery, service etc.

So you want to buy a spa (hot tub) but have no idea what to do, where to go and who to trust!
Every one's telling you there spa is the best and they can do the best deal, maybe you haven't even started looking yet and already your confused. This blog will give you the customer the low down on the good bad and ugly of the UK Spa industry, what's hot and what's not!

Lets start with the basics, where to research and where to go. The net is of course a great place to start as you can take time to research at your own pace and not be tempted by a salesman's great one week only deal!
